This may come across a little harsh at first, especially since I’m this so-called “Wellness Warrior”here to motivate others to lead healthier lives. But seriously, stop with the “new year, new me” bull. Just because the date has changed, doesn’t mean it’s time you have to get on some new path to better yourself.
It’s almost guaranteed this time of year that you will be asked, “What is your New Year resolution?”. You may have even heard yourself ask this question, and I myself am definitely guilty of the fact. But why do we live in this world that we feel we should change something about ourselves now, just because it’s the start of a new year? I guess there is something about January that makes us feel like we can start over and maybe have the time to reflect over the past years events. But why leave it until January 1st if we aren’t happy with a current aspect of our lives, or have a goal that we really want to strive towards and achieve? Why wait? Why reflect on an entire year, when you could spend 5 or 10 minutes of your day to reflect on the past week and plan for one to come? Would that not be a better way to keep your goals in mind?
My problem with new year resolutions is that, most of the time, they are this “thing” that we just say, but never actually do. By February, our resolutions have become a distant memory of a small-talk conversation among friends, and then next thing we know, we’re saying “I’ll start on Monday”.
So, if there is something you’ve been wanting to do for a while, like lose weight, start exercising, write a book, or start a new hobby, whatever it may be, START NOW. Each day is a new day. Each hour is a new hour. Each minute is a new minute – and one you can use to move forward towards goals and dreams you have for your lifetime. Not just for one silly year.
