After a sugar craving hit me today, I went straight to the kitchen to make my go-to healthy treat, Bliss Balls. Running low on my regular almond and cashew combo, I thought I would try something a bit different and throw in some hazelnuts instead.
Hazelnuts are a great source of vitamin E, folate, and also are a rich source of trace minerals such as manganese, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium. All that nutrition in one tiny nut!
Although delicious alone, we all know that chocolate and hazelnuts go together like “rama lamma lamma ka dinga da dinga dong”, so naturally I added a good heaped tablespoon of cacao. It’s not exactly Nutella, but the bittersweet kick of the cacao and nutty aroma of the hazelnuts really helps to keep any sugar cravings at bay.
- 3/4 cup hazelnuts
- 3/4 cup almonds
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp cacao powder
- 5 dates soaked in hot water
- 1/4 cup goji berries
- 1 Tbsp date water
- 1 Tbsp honey or maple syrup
Blend the hazelnuts and almonds together on high until you have a breadcrumb like consistency.
Add cinnamon and cacao powder and blend again to mix through.
Remove dates from water (keep the water), and add to the nut mix along with the goji berries. Blend again on high.
Add 1 tablespoon of the date water and the honey and blend until all combined. Add more date water if necessary for a stickier consistency.
Roll into bit sized balls. Coat with coconut if preferred and store in the fridge.
