When life gives you lemons, don’t do the lemon detox!

I have had so many people ask me what I think about The Lemon Detox Diet. To get straight to the point I think it’s atrocious. I cannot even believe how this product is allowed to be sold in health stores and pharmacies when it is so clearly the opposite of healthy.

This “detox” diet involves eating absolutely no food and instead recommends living off a liquid based diet for 10-14 days. I’m surprised there has been no deaths yet. I have however heard of many people feeling very dizzy, lethargic and even passing out from being on this diet.

The Lemon Detox Diet, also known as the Master Clense, was created by a man called Stanley Burroughs in the 1940’s for the purpose of remoxing toxins from the body and for the relief and healing of stomach ulcers. Stanley however was actually once charged for Second-Degree Murder after a patient died from one of his treatments. If that’s not enough to stop you doing the detox, keep reading…

1. So what exactly is in the Lemon Detox Diet and what do you do?

The diet involves drining 6 – 9 glasses of a “special syrup” mixture a day for 10-14 days. In one glass there is:

  • 20ml of Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup
  • 20ml of squeezed lemon juice (not included – buy your own lemons!)
  • a pinch a Cayenne Pepper
  • Water

That is ALL you drink! One glass of the mixture has around only 60 calories, and if you are drinking 9 of these a day, you are only getting about half the calories of what you would expect someone to be on a normal controlled weight loss plan. It’s no wonder why people feel faint!

2. How much does it cost?

For a 10 – 14 day supply you are looking at spending $160 or $87 for a 7 day supply which is a hell of a lot of cash for some “magical” syrup that is actually just a mixture of 1 part Palm Syrup and 1 part C-grade Canadian Maple Syrup, and Cayenne Pepper which you can buy from your local supermarket for $2.24. Not to mention you have to buy your own lemons!

3. Is it healthy?

In no way is this diet healthy and I would never recommend it. It is deficient in nutrients and will result in a lower metabolic rate. This diet only gives you around 8g of protein a day, whereas a woman aged 19-70 years old needs 46g of protein a day! The diet is also severely lacking in a wide range of vitamins and minerals including iron, calcium, selenium, and the B vitamins just to name a few. The DETOX concept is based on the idea of getting rid of toxins that can build up in our bodies and contribute to weight gain. There is NO SCIENTIFIC basis for this! Our bodies are quite capable of removing toxins naturally – the kidneys remove waste through urine, the skin through sweat, the intestines through faeces, the liver by detoxifying and filtering blood and the immune system by seeking and destroying toxins.

4. But will I lose weight???

Yes. You will lose weight on this diet, however you will be paying big price and I’m not just talking about money. This diet basically puts your body into “starvation mode”, resulting in not only breaking down body fat for energy, but also breaking down your muscle protein. This ultimately results in a large decrease in your metabolism. Therefore, once you start eating solid foods again, your body will regain the weight and end up with more body fat due to the loss in muscle and due to your body wanting to store more fat after coming out of the “starvation” period.

Lets get real people! If you want to lose weight and keep your metabolism, no amount of cayenne pepper or maple syrup is going to help you do this. Weight loss is achieved and maintained through a nutritionally balanced and portioned controlled diet, along with regular physical activity.

If you don’t believe me, by all means, pay $160 for the experience, but don’t blame me if you end up heavier than you were to begin with!
